39th Annual Aspen Filmfest

Aspen Film’s 39th Annual Filmfest returns to Aspen September 25-28, 2018. Screenings will take place and the Wheeler Opera House and Isis Theatre in Aspen as well as the Crystal Theatre in Carbondale.


This year’s festival includes four to six films per day as well as filmmaker and panel discussions following multiple films including: Behind the Magic with Don Hahn, From Book to Screen: Leave No Trace and Taking Documentary  to The Extreme.


A few highlights for this year’s festival include:


  • From Book to Big Screen: Leave No Trace: Thursday, Sept. 27, 5 p.m., Wheeler Opera House, (partnership with Aspen Words): Ben Foster and Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie return to traditional housing after years of living in the wildlands and find adapting to their new lives difficult. After the screening Aspen Words Executive Director Adrienne Brodeur will join producer Lisa Resiman and Peter Rock, author of My Abandonmen, the award-winning novel upon which the film is based, for a panel discussion.

  • This Mountain Life: Friday, Sept. 28, 2:30 p.m., Isis Theatre: This film presents the story of a mother daughter duo who attempt to do a ski trek in the Coast Mountains. Q&A to follow.

  • Kusama: Infinity: Saturday, Sept. 29, 2 p.m., Isis Theatre: This documentary follows the legendary artist Yayoi Kusama life and challenges of bringing her artistic vision to the world stage. Aspen Film’s board president is an executive producer. Q&A to follow.

  • 3 Days 2 Nights: Wednesday, Sept. 26, 5:30 p.m., Wheeler Opera House:  This documentary tells a story about a family plane crash en route to a ski vacation and the brothers who lived to tell the tale. Q&A to follow.

  • Momentum Generation: 8:15 p.m., Wheeler Opera House: This documentary illustrates deep friendships in the legendary surf crew including Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, and more. Q&A to follow.
