While the snow this December has been off to a slower start than usual in Colorado, all four mountains in Aspen Snowmass are officially open for the season. The Aspen/Snowmass snowmaking and grooming crews are ensuring that there are runs in great shape. There is top-to-bottom skiing on Aspen Mountain, and additional terrain is opening daily. Outdoor Recreation

  • Snowshoeing: Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES) offers daily snowshoe tours on Aspen Mountain, Ashcroft and Snowmass. Guests can also opt to hire an ACES naturalist guide and explore the mountains on their own schedule. Basic fees are just $50/hour per guide, full details here.
  • Ice skating: The SK8 rink, also known as the Silver Circle rink, is located in the heart of downtown Aspen, next to local restaurant CP Burger and across from the Rubey Park Transportation Center. The smallest of the three local rinks, SK8 is an outdoor rink at the base of Aspen Mountain, with excellent views of Smuggler and Red Mountain. Cost for skating is only $8. With CP Burger rink-side, skaters can break for a lunch of burgers, fries, and salads, or warm up with a cup of hot cocoa before heading back out onto the ice.
  • Fat biking: Fat biking has grown vastly in popularity for winter visitors in Aspen looking for an activity off the slopes. Visitors can rent fat bikes from various local shops in town including Replay Sports, Stapleton, Sun Dog Athletics, and Ute City Cycles. Guests staying at The Little Nell and Limelight can use the complimentary fat bikes at any time.
  • Fly-fishing: Fly-fishing is one of the few sports adventurers can enjoy year-round in Aspen. Get a taste of what it’s like to be on the water here in Aspen.


Family Fun

  • Town carriage & sleigh ride: Enjoy a classic horse drawn carriage and sleigh ride with Aspen Carriage and Sleigh. The ride takes guests around downtown Aspen and the coachman provides an in-depth history tour of Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley. Book your carriage tour online today.
  • Snow cat tours: Guests in Aspen can book a snow cat tour with T Lazy 7 up to the Maroon Bells. The unique tour takes guests up the Maroon Lake at the base of Maroon Bells for incredible photo opportunities.
  • Aspen Recreation Center: The Aspen Recreation Center (ARC) is the perfect place for families to enjoy in between ski days. The Whoa Nelly sledding hill is located behind the building, and if you don't have your own sled you may rent one for $5. Warm up after sledding with a soak in the hot tub. Swim at the indoor pool and ride the two-story water slide for hours, or try out the indoor rock climbing on the tower. 
  • ACES Kid Day Camps: Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES) is offering Winter Explorers day camp for kids ages 6 - 12 at Hallam Lake in Aspen over the holiday season. Winter Explorers will run each weekday, Dec. 21st - 29th and Jan. 2nd - 3rd, from 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM except for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. In addition to the day camps, ACES will also offer a new two-day workshop for older students (ages 10 - 14) called Winter World Photo Explorations, led by professional photographer Cath Adams. For more information and registration click here.
  • Dec. 20-31, 2017, 12 Days of Aspen: During the 12 Days of Aspen, charming downtown Aspen becomes a winter wonderland of holiday cheer. Free ice skating, visits with Santa – and Santa's reindeer, s'more-making parties, art, ornament-making, and stocking-decorating workshops for kids, 12 Days of Après, and much more for kids and adults. Great for an afternoon activity or fun après-ski entertainment, 12 Days of Aspen brings additional cheer to Aspen locals and visitors. Arts & Culture

  • Visit Aspen Art Museum‘s 30,000-square-foot building designed by Pritzker-prize winning architect Shigeru Ban. A non-collecting institution presenting the newest, most important evolutions in international contemporary art, Aspen Art Museum’s innovative and timely exhibitions, education and public programs, immersive activities, and community happenings actively engage audiences in thought-provoking experiences of art, culture, and society. Located in the center of downtown Aspen, the museum offers free admission Tuesdays – Sundays from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
